If both barracks and the battlefield are full (the unusual situation for the normal gameplay), you won’t be able to buy new troops for coins until you have free space, but you will be able to buy any new troops for gems (including super card pack).
SHARDS OF WAR TACTICS UPGRADE
You will be able to upgrade them all at once there, send them to the battlefield or combine them with battlefield troops at any time. When your battlefield army is fully set, all new troops will go to the barracks. Your barracks capacity grows with the amount of levels you completed.
Combine All - combine all eligible troops inside the barracks. You can also combine identical troops in the barracks. Don’t release finger from the troop and move it onto free space on the battlefield to deploy those troops or onto the glowing troop if the same kind to merge them. Keep pressing on the troop icon for 1-2 seconds until you feel haptic feedback (if vibration feature is on) or until the troop card is highlighted. Choose the troop you want to move or combine and press on it. If your army is fully set, all new troops will automatically get stored in the barracks. You can also use it for regrouping and upgrading troops. The function of the barracks is to store troops you don’t need when your battlefield slots are fully occupied. You can do it on the battlefield or in the barracks. To upgrade the troops you need to combine troops of the same kind and same level (stars) by dragging and merging them together. The first upgrade (upgrading hero to the 2nd level) usually requires 2 identical hero cards. After you collect enough cards (shards) of the same hero, you can upgrade the hero to the next level. To upgrade your hero, you must collect hero cards (shards) that you can obtain by opening chests, buying super card packs or by taking part in special events. Legendary heroes have an additional skill that unlocks when they reach level 11. There are 3 kinds of heroes in the game: rare (blue color), epic (violet color) and legendary (orange). Same goes for the troop skills, thus, for example, each single pilgrim has his own healing skill that activates separately from others. All stats including Attack, HP and Defense are shown per one unit (count). 
Multiple-unit troops have up to 9 counts in the squad. There are two kinds of troops in the game: single unit (one count) and multiple units (many counts). The stats you see in the troops’ menu are for a single count. Thus you can see the skill of the Pilgrim called “Solar Healing” and information about what exactly it does.
If the troop has an ability, you can swipe to the right to open the ability description.
There you can review different level's stats by pressing the arrow below. Press on the icon of the troop you want to review the appeared window will show its stats. Now you are able to check Hero / Troop stats and skill description in the "Heroes / Troops" section which you can access from the main menu.
